I spent twenty years inside the nicotine cycle.
The first decade was heavy smoking. The next ten years I chased every "way out" the market offered — and stayed chained to the chemical hit the whole time. I worked those same years as a product manager in consumer goods, and at times I helped build exactly the kind of products engineered to keep people coming back. I knew how the trap was built. Knowing the blueprint didn't make it any easier to walk out of.
When I was finally done with nicotine for good, I noticed something strange: my hand still reached for the ritual. Not for the chemical — that decision was already made. For the pause.
